Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they stated.

Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police say early analysis indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"At present there remains no lead as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

City officials announced they were working "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for details.

A high-ranking representative said the vandalism left him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.

"This event affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
